Harris Teeter at Willowhaven Grand Opening

The grand opening celebration continues at the new Harris Teeter at the corner of Guess Rd and Horton Rd in Durham. This store opened in January and replaces the longstanding neighborhood Harris Teeter across the street. I have visited this new store a few times and am happy to see that they have expanded their gluten free offerings. Because of the increased shelf space they are able to stock more products. Some that landed in my grocery cart recently were Vans frozen waffles, Cedarlane garden vegetable enchiladas, Amy's baked ziti kids meal, Ians's alphabet shaped potato fries, bionature gluten free spaghetti, Bob's Red Mill rice flour, and gluten free rice crackers.

Several products are marked on the shelves with a green gluten free tag to help consumers identify them. Harris Teeter does not provide a listing of their gluten free products at the store or on line. I called their customer service number and was told that is because products may change often. Customers may put in a special request for an item and if it is in the main warehouse it can be shipped to one's local store. However there also is not a list of available products to choose from. So, we can ask for our favorite products and with enough requests they may begin to stock those items.

As part of the Grand Opening Celebration the Pharmacy will be offering a Health Awareness Clinic on Tuesday February 10th, 9:00-1:30 and 2:30-6:30. The clinic will offer cholesterol, blood pressure, and glucose screening and determine body fat analysis and arterial stiffness. These are all free with a VIC card. For further information call the pharmacy at 919-471-3580.

Durham Intro & Gluten Free Resources at Library

Durham Intro
Zach has done the RDU area a great service by launching his blog, he has gathered an incredible amount of valuable information in a very short time, note his own diagnosis of Celiac Disease was less than a year ago! I am happy to have the opportunity to talk about living Gluten Free in Durham specifically. I will be speaking from the perspective of a person with Celiac Disease, a mom of a teenage daughter also diagnosed with the disease and combine this with my knowledge as a Registered Dietitian.

Durham County Library
When I was first diagnosed besides spending tons of time on the Internet I also went to the Durham County Library and checked out every book they had on anything to do with living gluten free. Durham has an incredible library system and a library card is free for all that live in Durham County. In the last several years Durham has tripled their holdings on books related to Celiac Disease or gluten free living with 20 available titles available to patrons. Most materials can be checked out for 21 days at a time, plenty of time to try a few new recipes and gather new ideas! You can even access the library from your home computer at http://www.durhamcountylibrary.com and have books sent to one of 9 locations or even the book mobile.

The information available to help educate those following a gluten free diet continues to increase; it can be overwhelming at first, but day by day it gets easier and tastier to follow a gluten free way of life.
