Gluten Free Students at UNC Chapel Hill

It is getting closer to the time when I will be sending my daughter off to college to navigate the gluten free world on her own. With August only 4 months away I have begun gathering information to make this transition healthy and smooth. She is excited about her acceptance to UNC, Chapel Hill and I am happy to know it is a straight shot down 15-501! I have talked with the food service department about their menu options for gluten free students. I have also made contact with the dietitan who works in the student health area. Both, have been very supportive, but also very honest in the fact that there is not much in place for gluten free students and that as a UNC student you are not bound to have a meal plan. The cafeteria does have some type of rice bread, but no GF toasters. I am awaiting an email that is suppose to send me menus to review. So my focus and goal as a mom and a dietitian is to work with UNC to educate them, provide resources for others who may be coming to the school and feel confident that my daughter will not have to worry about what she will be eating. More to come on this topic.....

I don't know much about main campus offerings, since I'm a grad student over in the School of Public Health... But let your daughter know she's not alone as a Celiac Tar Heel!

As a student at UNC-CH, I find it hard enought to find good healthy food, let alone good healthy gluten-free food! More information on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

So glad to receive comments from current UNC students who are trying to navigate GF life in Chapel Hill. If you have any valuable information on places you eat, please email me directly and I would love to include those resources in my upcoming posts!

I am also a UNC student with celiac. When I came, the dietician promised me all of this gluten free food, but I found that there wasn't much at all. Luckily, I found a great sorority with a great group of girls that also had a private chef. There are four girls with celiac disease in my sorority and the chef makes us gluten-free meals! As for franklin street, McCalister's Deli works well, so does Chipotle and Cosmic Cantina. Of course there are others, but those are my favorites. :) Good luck! She isn't alone!
